Our Founder’s Story
Academia
After successful early careers in academia, aerospace and scientific research, Matt and Alex first met at the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) in 2013. They worked as senior physicists at the Culham campus where they performed novel research in advanced statistical techniques, algorithms and physical modelling for nuclear fusion. They quickly became friends through a shared passion for AI, data science and plasma physics.
Innovating
Over many years Matt and Alex watched the AI boom and resurgence that began with DeepMinds 2013 breakthrough of AI playing Atari. Although AI technology has found many big successes in image analysis, speech recognition and now LLMs, it’s notable that conventional AI has so far failed to make an impact in control systems. Alex did his PhD in neuroevolution, an advanced AI technique that allows the incorporation of biologically inspired ideas such as neuroplasticity. Alex believed that these ideas held the key to making neural networks that can learn and adapt at the edge.
Luffy AI
Matt & Alex decided to cofound a startup company around a new approach to AI control and optimisation in 2019. They co-founded Luffy as a team spinout of UKAEA and began developing their unique adaptive intelligence framework, focusing first on robotics applications and later moving into industrial process control & optimisation. A shared passion for technology, breakthrough performance and environmental sustainability has helped Matt and Alex build a highly sophisticated technology and organisation that is energised to deliver transformational value for the industrial and robotics sectors.
